Durenda is an experienced nursing administrator with more than 30 years’ experience in clinical nursing, education, management, and leadership. Durenda is a skilled problem solver; self-motivated with an orientation towards goal achievement, quality, and outcomes based practice. She has demonstrated success in change management, lean processes, team building, effective communication, conflict resolution, and partnering collaboratively with the medical staff.
Durenda began her professional career in 1982, serving in roles of increased responsibility, including positions ranging from manager to Vice President of Nursing. She is a clinical expert in the management of critical care and emergency patient care delivery. At St. Joseph Medical Center, she pioneered self-directed work teams as a method of nursing management, and was promoted to Nurse Manager of Cardiac Surgery Services (CVICU and cardiac surgical services) accountable for operating budget of $11 million and 52 FTEs. Durenda was later promoted to Director of Emergency Department (ED) accountable for 92 FTEs and operating budget of $6.5 million and subsequently promoted to Assistant VP of Nursing Operations with responsibility of $24 million operating budget and 314 FTEs. While at St. Joseph Medical Center, Durenda collaborated with Senior Process Improvement Facilitator on pioneering work by implementing Lean process improvement strategies. She served as an organizational lead, change agent and key driver for patient flow management using lean concepts for multiple departments. Resulting in a reduced length of stay (LOS) within ED by 40% for chest pain patients; a 25% reduction in overall ED LOS and bed placement cycle time by 25%; decreased ambulance diversion by 85%. Improved direct admission process resulting in 95% of patient arriving at hospital with appropriate physician orders. St. Joseph was awarded the 2009 Maryland Daily Record Innovator of the Year Award for the Emergency Department’s Lean work.
Durenda provided lean process improvements while consulting at Southeast Hospital in Missouri for patient flow in Emergency Department resulting in a 25% decrease in overall LOS. Most recently, she served as the VP of Inpatient Nursing services at St. Agnes Hospital, responsible for $35 million operating budget and 680 FTEs. At St. Agnes she championed lean process improvements to reduce inpatient boarder hours by 75% and 50% reduction in bed assignment process. She current works for a prominent healthcare software provider to assistant the implementation and integration of electronic medical records with patient care processes.
Durenda obtained her Nursing Diploma from Lancaster General Hospital and an Associate of Science degree from Franklin & Marshall College. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree Nursing from College of Notre Dame of Maryland where she was awarded the College of Notre Dame of Maryland Weekend College Nurse Award. She holds a Master’s Degree in Health Care Administration from College of Notre Dame of Maryland (now Notre Dame University of Maryland) and was awarded the College of Notre Dame of Maryland Academic Achievement in Management award. Durenda also received the Smart CXO Executive Management Team award in April 2011.
